R2 has arrived. Rivian began customer deliveries of its mass-market R2 SUV on June 9, 2026, its “Model 3 moment”, and pulled forward a ~$45,000 entry trim to summer 2027. Gross margin has been positive three straight quarters and the Q1 2026 net loss narrowed to $416M. Offsetting it: the NHTSA opened a probe into ~115,000 vehicles on May 28. Shares ~$16.23, +4.4% on the day.

Q4 2025−62.5%+9.3%−64.8%
Q1 2026−30.1%+8.6%−63.8%

Rivian is not profitable. On a trailing-twelve-month basis net income is −$3.52B and the net margin is −63.6%. The encouraging signal is the trajectory: the quarterly net margin has improved from −85.6% (Q2 2025) to −30.1% (Q1 2026), and gross margin has been positive for three consecutive quarters.

FY2025 revenue was $5.39B against a net loss of −$3.65B. The Q1 2026 narrowing was helped by ~$478M of non-operating income; the underlying operating loss (−$881M) remains large. The R2 ramp is the swing factor for whether gross margin can scale into operating leverage.

Revenue growth is positive but modest at the top line (+11.4% YoY in Q1 2026). EPS remains negative: −$0.33 in Q1 2026 versus −$0.48 a year earlier, a ~31% narrowing of the per-share loss. Because earnings are negative there is no meaningful P/E or PEG ratio, so Peter Lynch's PEG test cannot be applied here.

Consensus models accelerating growth as R2 scales: FY2026E revenue +31%, FY2027E +64%, but both years are still forecast to be loss-making (FY2026E EPS −$2.42; FY2027E −$1.89). Catalysts: R2 deliveries, the pulled-forward ~$45k trim, and Volkswagen / Amazon partnerships. Headwinds: heavy cash burn, ~15% YoY share dilution, and the NHTSA probe.

Stage analysis (Weinstein)

Price vs 200-day MA
Above
$16.23 vs $15.62
50-day / 200-day MA
~Flat
$15.51 / $15.62

The structure looks like a Stage 1 base, not an established Stage 2 uptrend. Price ($16.23) sits just above both the 50-day ($15.51) and 200-day ($15.62) moving averages, and those two averages are nearly equal and roughly flat, the classic signature of a basing range rather than a rising-MA markup.

Action has been largely sideways within the 52-week band ($11.57–$22.69). The early-June pop on R2 / AT&T news is a potential breakout attempt above a flat base, but a confirmed Stage 1→2 transition would need sustained closes above the ~$17–18 area on expanding volume, not yet present.

Near-term technicals are neutral-to-constructive: price above flat 50/200-day MAs, RSI mid-range (~49.6), MACD modestly positive. The notable feature is short interest at ~18.2% of float (145M shares, 5.2 days to cover), meaningful squeeze fuel on any positive surprise.

The stock spent months range-bound near a flat 200-day MA, consistent with volatility compression, before the early-June upside thrust. Live at-the-money July implied volatility is ~66%, down materially from a reported ~109% in late April (MarketChameleon, via web), i.e. options are pricing a calmer path than a quarter ago.

Unverified: a specific Bollinger-Band-width number and a named bullish pattern (cup-and-handle / bull-flag) were not confirmable from a charting source; the flat base with an upside thrust is structurally breakout-like but unconfirmed.

The dominant narrative is value-versus-fear: a real product/scale catalyst (R2) against persistent losses and a fresh regulatory probe. Sentiment over the month is net constructive but two-sided.

Insider activity: insiders hold only ~0.66% of shares and no notable insider purchases were found in the last 30 days.

Momentum is mixed: the stock was down ~30% YTD by mid-May before the early-June rebound, so relative strength versus the S&P has been poor over the year but is improving sharply into the R2 launch. Published analyst views on the company are unusually divided.

Unverified: precise up/down-volume ratio and quarter-over-quarter institutional flow direction were not found as single figures.

Rivian is a long-duration, cash-burning growth name (FCF −$3.04B TTM) with a high beta (1.62), it amplifies macro swings in both directions. The fate of federal EV incentives and the pace of mass-market EV adoption are the macro variables that matter most.

Unverified: the precise status of the U.S. $7,500 EV credit as of June 2026 and Rivian's specific tariff exposure were not pinned to a single source.

Summary of key considerations

Rivian is a study in early-stage transition. Three straight quarters of positive gross margin and a now-delivering R2 are real progress, set against a still-deep net loss, ongoing dilution, and a fresh NHTSA probe. The most distinctive features are the improving loss trajectory, a high short interest, and a notably divided analyst community, characteristics of a company whose outcome is far from settled.

Supporting factors

Gross margin positive 3 quarters R2 now delivering ~18% short float ~$4.8B cash

Risk factors

−$3.5B TTM net loss +15% YoY dilution NHTSA probe (~115k vehicles) Slightly negative net cash Divided analyst views Range-bound base

What's working: the R2 launch is the scale catalyst the business has worked toward; losses are narrowing quickly, gross margin is positive, the balance sheet holds ~$4.8B of cash, and a short position equal to ~18% of float can amplify moves in both directions.

What could go wrong: still −$3.5B TTM net loss and −$3.0B free cash flow, ~15% annual dilution, a slightly negative net-cash position, and a regulatory probe into ~115k vehicles. Execution on the R2 ramp is the central unknown.
